Indeed the new sixth generation BMW M5 is nothing short of spectacular with its 4.4-liter V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology. Its output increased from 560 hp to 600 combined with 553 lb-ft of torque (+53 lb-ft from previous gen), making it the most powerful BMW 5 Series Sedan of all time. We’re going 0 to 100km/h real quick with this bad boy (to be exact it’s 3.4 secs)—almost 1 full second faster than the 2016 M5.
Let’s take a closer look at why the all-new BMW M5 is one of the most highly anticipated cars of the year.
Revolutionary M xDrive
The 2018 BMW M5 has the first-ever M-specific M xDrive all-wheel drive system with fully variable torque distribution between the front and rear axles. The driver can select their preferred torque split by choosing the following modes: 4WD (all-wheel drive), 4WD Sport or 2WD without DSC (Dynamic Stability Control).
The M xDrive has a pronounced rear-wheel bias and only involves the front axle once the rear wheels have reached their traction limits and require support. As you may have guessed, the 2WD mode sends power exclusively to the rear axle—for those who crave a little drifting.
Design: Form Follows Function
The overall exterior design of the new BMW M5 makes for a head turner like no other. It shares design cues with its 5 series counterpart, but also has special BMW M5-specific design elements that focus on function (plus it looks really good!). Here are a few examples:
- Entirely new front apron with large air inlets to allow for enhanced cooling for the engine and brakes
- Sculpted aluminum bonnet with M5-specific contours
- Contoured, Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic roof to lower the car’s center of gravity and reduce weight
- Weight-optimized exhaust system with quad tailpipes
- M rear diffuser and lower bumper trim
We often get asked whether these powerful luxury vehicles are suitable for everyday use, and the answer is yes. The thoroughly redesigned BMW M5 is extremely versatile with its new eight-speed M Steptronic transmission and M-specific suspension and steering. From efficient and comfortable to ultra-fast and race-ready, the M5 is made to be driven.
