Auto West BMW has distinguished itself as the most sustainable BMW facility in the world, and Canada's leading eco-luxury automotive retailer. We have put over $2 million into green business practices and environmental technologies. We're committed to using our business practices to help our community and showcase what can be done as a green store.
Auto West Group's commitment to sustainability continues beyond BMW. In 2012, they opened the largest MINI dealership in Canada, MINI Richmond, who is also taking the sustainability lead in the automotive industry. With the installation of 168 rooftop solar panels, it is considered the largest solar panel installation on a dealership in Canada. In addition, a large exterior green wall was installed at MINI Richmond to reduce the temperature within the dealership, generate oxygen, and is perceived as outdoor public art with a honey bee design incorporated through selected flowers and plants.
Reclaimed storm water is also used in the washroom urinals and water closets to irrigate both the green wall and landscape. Furthermore, to meet the future demand of electric cars, a public EV charge station was recently installed in front of MINI Richmond, furthering Auto West Group?s commitment to support sustainability in their community.
In an effort to continue incorporating green technology within the Auto West Group and serve those who are urban e-motorists, Auto West BMW, one of only six dealerships in Canada with the eligibility to sell the BMW i franchise, is currently undergoing an expansion to accommodate the arrival of the BMW i3 and i8 models. This will also include the addition of public charging stations with the expected completion of the Auto West BMW i showroom in Fall 2013.
"We have made all of these investments without the expectation of an immediate financial return. This is about being good corporate citizens within our community by doing what is right for the environment, while also setting an example as a sustainable leader in the automotive marketplace", says Pete Sargent, Project Manager for Auto West Group.
In recognition of these wide-ranging efforts to reduce environmental impact and raise awareness, our Founder and President, Joachim Neumann, was presented with "The Most Sustainable BMW Dealership in the World" award at the prestigious 2013 BMW Sales Excellence Award Ceremony in Munich, Germany.
BMW has become a worldwide leader among automakers by working to reduce fuel consumption and emissions through the use of lightweight materials, turbocharging, energy reclamation, hybrid and plug-in electric vehicle powertrains. Auto West BMW has decided to follow that example with the construction of our dealership buildings and everyday operations.
"This sustainability award plays a crucial role in promoting the principles of environmental responsibility to an industry that?s considered to be very wasteful", says Neumann. He adds, "Auto West Group is committed to developing a greener environment for Canada, one project at a time."
We went with geothermal heating and cooling in place of a traditional HVAC system. The system consists of a series of six pipes that extend 100 feet into the ground to control dealership temperatures.
We designed a separate recycling building to meet our recycling needs within the dealership. The building is completely self-sustaining, powered by a combination of photovoltaic panels and a 53-foot-tall vertical access wind turbine (the first in B.C.).
Our car wash recycling system recycles up to 98% of water used. We also reduced water consumption with two 4,000-gallon (15,000L) underground water tanks that collect storm runoff.
Our staff-initiated recycling program ensures recycling practices within the dealership are followed including cardboard, paper, and composting.
We installed our charge station in preparation for the all-electric and plug-in hybrid BMW i Series.
To recognize the worldwide issue of colony collapse disorder, we installed a honeybee apiary on the rooftop gardens of Auto West BMW. We have over 150,000 bees that pollinate plants on the property and nearby areas. Our Green Roof facilities allow us to grow fresh foods, and we are partnered with the local food bank to supply these foods to those in need in the community.
